Forum (www.78online.com/forum)
The 78label email list is a discussion group for 78
RPM record labels. The group consists of an email list with
regular or digest subscriptions, a web forum, and a label-scan database
containing images of 78 RPM record
labels.
The email list has regular, digest and 'nomail' subscriptions.
See: http://www.78online.com for more details.
All submitted email is also posted to the web forum, where you can read
today's and previous day's posts.
There is a database web page with facilities to submit, edit and view
78 RPM record label-scans (images) and associated data.
See: http://www.78online.com/data
Background
and types of subscriptions
How do mail lists work? A subscriber sends an
email
to the list server, which then sends an exact copy of the email message
to each member. On weekends, 78label currently forwards about 55
messages
per day. It is useful to have a mail reader which implements mail
filters,
and set up a filter to automatically place 78label email in its own
mailbox.
Two common Windows email readers are Eudora and Microsoft Outlook. Use
eudora (http://www.eudora.com, click free download) if you can, as
Outlook
is very prone to virus infestation.
The 78label mailing list has two types of subscriptions. A regular
subscription means that you get all email as soon as it sent. A digest
subscription means that you receive summary digests a few times per day
that contain
the all the messages since the last digest. Many members
perfer the regular subscription, where you can respond within minutes
to
a new posting. The digest is created each day at about 6:00
AM EDT. It is possible to sign up for both the regular AND the
digest
list at the same time.
The address of this list is
78label@78online.com
or 78label@78online.com
This list runs version 1.94.5 of Majordomo, demime and bulk mailer.
A customized version of Phorum is used for the web forums.

List
conventions and manners
-
78label is an open list. Anyone may subscribe with
the approval
of the list owner. Only members may request the member
list.
Non-subscribers may post messages, but these are
'moderated'.
Non-member's postings are examined, spam email is thrown out, and
legitimate
messages are forwarded to the list, after a delay of a few hours to a
couple
of days.
-
Messages posted should concern 78 labels and label-scans.
-
The list is unmoderated, all member's messages are posted as-is,
without
prior review.
-
No pornography, foul language,
name-calling
or spam mail is permitted. You will be permanently
unsubscribed.
Your ISP will received proof of your activities and will probably
terminate
your internet account.
-
Please do not post lists of records for sale or auction.
Post
instead an email with a short description of the offering and include a
link to a web page, or to an FTP site, where the entire list is
located.
There is another mail list devoted to 78-rpm sales, its address is
78-c@onelist.com,
join it by going to this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/78-C/
-
Please do not post mail with attachments -- Your attachment will be
stripped out, although some text attachments may be converted on
in-line text. Attachments can cause long stretches of gibberish to
appear in the digest.
-
Please send regular (text) mail to the list, do not send HTML (Bold
face, underlined, etc.) formatted mail. Many members do not have email
readers that can read HTML formatted mail, it looks like gibberish to
them.
Filters on the list will automatically strip out HTML and attempt to
extract the
plain text. This may cause parts of your message to be lost or
garbled. Most mail programs have options to turn off HTML mail.
-
If replying to a long message, please include only the relevant parts
in
a reply. This lowers the server load and everyone gets their
messages
faster.
-
"Me, too", "I agree" or "send me one" (or
similar)
messages are discouraged. Please send this type of message
to
the offering party in PRIVATE email. Let's save the
bandwidth
for relevant discussion.
-
If you intend to reply personally to the sender of a
message,
make sure that the TO: field contains the email
address
of the message originator, and does not contain 78label@78online.com.
Otherwise hundereds of people will get your reply, and see your
'personal'
comments. The default reply is that the mail will be sent to the
mail list.
-
If you go on vacation and do not read your email, your mailbox may fill
up and bounce all email sent to you back to the list manager. This is
not
fun for the list manager. Please send email to
owner-78label@78online.com
and ask him/her to set your account to 'nomail' when you cannot read
your
mail every day. Or make sure your mailbox at your ISP is
large,
since the list can generate 2 Megabytes of mail per week.
How
to Subscribe
to the 78label mailing list
To subscribe to 78label you must send an email to the mail list
program.
You must send the email from the email address where you want
to receive the mail. Note that the name 78label
contains the
the letter L, not the number 'one'. An upper
or lower case L is OK. For example:
--------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------
If this seems too complicated or you cannot made it work then send
email
to owner-78label@78online.com and in the body of the
message
ask him/her to subscribe you to the list. This method may
require
a day or two.
How
to
Unsubscribe from 78label mailing list
To unsubscribe from 78label you must send an email to the mail list
program.
Your must send this message from the email address you used to
subscribe.
The unsubscribe process is immediate. See below for how to
unsubscribe
from the Digest list. You may use upper or lower case L. Be sure
you
send the mail to majordomo@78online.com, NOT to
78label@78online.com !!!!! For example:
--------------------------------------------------------
How to subscribe to the
digest
To subscribe to digest you must send an email to the mail list program.
The digest is sent daily, and contains all the email from the previous
24 hours. The digest is created at 8:00 AM EDT.
Note
that the name 78label contains the lower case of the letter L,
not
the number 'one'. You may use an upper case L or a
lower case L. For example:
--------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:
You can subscribe to both the mail list and the
digest.
If you send both types of email messages (subscribe 78label
and subscribe 78label digest), you will then get each
email
sent to the list as it is sent, and also a daily digest containing the
email for the previous 24 hours.
-----------------------------------------------------------
How to unsubscribe to the digest
To unsubscribe from digest you must send an email to the mail
list
program. Note that the name 78label contains the lower case of the
letter
L,
not the number 'one'. For example:
--------------------------------------------------------
How to get the
archive
file and old digests
In addition to the daily digest, the list server archives each message
in an archive file. The list is currently set to generate a new archive
monthly. The archive file name is of the form
78label-0006,
where the 00 represents the year (2000), and the following number
represents
the issue number (month). The server also maintains CONTENTS and
TOPICS files, which tell you which archive file contains which message
'subject' Please turn off your 'signature' (or put the end
line last) when you send the following emails, or the server will try
to
process each signature line as a command.
To find out the names of monthly archive files (big!) and daily
digest
files, use the "index" command. The same archive is used for the
regular
list and the digest list. Send an email to majordomo@78online.com and
in
the body of the message put the following::
You will receive a message with all the files available for the mail
list
and the digest list. Files that start with 78label are large
archives.
Files that start with v00.n are daily digests, but there may be several
per day, as they are limited to 40,000 characters. The files for
the mail list and the digest list are identical. Note that file
names must be all lower case. For example:
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom
daemon
4299997 Dec 21 18:00 78label.0200 (closed)
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom
daemon
11219 Jan 20 20:11 78label.0201 (size suggest still growing for
current
month)
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom
daemon
54781 Feb 18 05:45 v2002.n001 (first digest for year 2002)
-rw-rw---- 1 majordom
daemon
47665 Feb 18 16:47 v2002.n002 (2nd digest)
If you see files in which you're interested, you may retrieve them
by
using the "get" command and specifying the list name and
archive
filename.
For instance, to retrieve the digest file called
v2000.n049
and the mail list archive file, you should send email to
majordomo@78online.com
and in the body of the message put the following: (note:
the file names are case sensitive)
get 78label v2001.n007 <--Notice,
want a daily digest Volume 2001, number 7
get 78label
78label.0201
<--Notice, want a single mail
list
archive (May be over 4 Megabytes large!)
end
You may put multiple 'get' requests in the same message on
successive
lines. Put in the end line, or turn off your 'signature
line(s)',
or the server will process your signature as commands (it will
also
send you a general help file). [get 78label] or [get
78label-digest]
may be used, you will get the same result. Warning: You
probably
don't want to fetch the archive file, it may be many Megabytes.
If you do, be sure your email program is set to allow receipt of large
messages. Also, some servers limit the size of email messages.
My
mail stopped arriving, what happened??
For various reasons, the mail sent to you may be rejected
(your
mailbox is full, your ISP has shut the mail server down for
maintenance,
part of the internet is broken or cut off for a while,
etc.).
When this happens, your mail piles up in our outgoing mail
queue.
With 50 messages per day per person, this starts slowing down
processing
of outgoing messages. If your delivery problem lasts for over
about
4 hours, your subscription may be moved to the 'nomail' list. You
will stop receiving emails. You must send a message to owner-78label@78online.com
and request that your mail be turned on again. Eventually there will be
a web page where you can do this yourself.
I
have multiple email addresses, how can I post from them, but get only 1
copy of the emails?
The list owner can add additional email addresses to the 'nomail'
list
for 78label or for 78label-digest. That way, you can send posts
to the
list from those other addresses, but only receive one set of messages
from
the list. Send an email to owner-78label@78online.com and
request
that another email address be added to the list. Please give both
addresses, the address which which you are currently subscribed, and
the
new address or addresses from which you want to send mail to the
list.
You can also have a 'nomail'-only subscription so you receive no
list mail, but can still post to the list. You can then read the list
on
the list's web forum. This is useful if you have a yahoo.com,
hotmail.com, etc. web email
account, you can post from that address when traveling, and read the
list
at http://www.78online.com/forum
Contacting the
person
who manages the mail list server
To contact the person who manages the 78label mailing list, send
mail
to: owner-78label@78online.com.
This person can help you with operational problems, subscription
problems, inability to access the digest, turn off your mail for
vacation,
etc.
Questions about the content or length of messages, the goals
or
conventions of the list, etc. should be addressed to the list
itself.
